2018 was one of the landmark years for the LGBTQ community, especially in India. With the abolition of Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code, the colonial law that discriminated a section of the population on the basis of sex and sexual orientation, and had historically led to tragedy and anguish, was remedied. And with that a new era in equality was ushered in!
The process of normalizing and putting the issues and lives of the LGBTQ community, at the forefront has since taken precedence. With many queer characters and story lines, making it to mainstream, the task of selecting the best has indeed become a difficult process. But these are wonderful problems to have, especially when it gives us an excuse to procrastinate and binge watch some great web content with zero guilt.
So, here is a list of the shows that placed queer people (and issues!) in the spotlight.
1. Queer Eye
Netflix’s Queer Eye is a show about five individuals known as the Fab Five, set out on a mission to makeover the lives of some wonderful boys and girls, and we’re amazed at the transformations. They give us an insight into men and women accepting the LGBTQ community, as these five happily take over their lives and push their boundaries. Added to that, is the eye candy that these five bring to your daily lives. Do you need any other reason to start already? We doubt!
Transparent is about sexuality, spirituality and gender identity. It follows the life of the dysfunctional Pfefferman family, as they grapple with one secret after another. It’s unique approach of LGBTQ storytelling, is something that will make you hooked right from the get go!
3. RuPaul’s drag race
You must be living under a rock if you aren’t familiar with this show! It a step towards celebrating the drag culture while paying homage to numerous drag and LGBTQ icons of the West. If you’ve ever been curious about what drag culture actually entails, this series should not be missed at any cost.
When it comes to Indian web series, the LGBTQ community is slowly but steadily making their way into the mainstream narrative. Alt Balaji’s Boygiri is one show that throws a light onto the life of a group of 6 men, out of which one is a happy gay man. It’s fun, pure comedy that is totally binge worthy!
5. Romil and Jugal
A modern day Romeo and Juliet but with a twist. It’s a gay love story between the protagonists Romil and Jugal. Together, they give us a fresh perspective towards how the society is changing and becoming more accepting. Seeing such a fresh take on love stories, is both refreshing and interesting!
