Guide to Dressing up in Kolkata Heat!
Summers in Kolkata, can be daunting – the humidity, sweat, pollution and the blazing sun, can cause havoc to our skin. Dehydration, rashes, sunburns, and tan lines are just some of the problems that we face. From covering up ourselves with scarves and shrugs, to chugging bottles of juices, drinks and water, we have done it all. Clothing is a big problem in this extreme humidity and heat, as the effort to "dress pretty” goes in vain. However, to make the job a tad easier, we list down 5 effective guidelines for you to dress the best version of yourself in the summer heat.
1) Use Muslin/Cotton Scarves
We all need a cover up in the blazing heat. Local transport, scooter and bike rides, or regular commutes to work is a journey filled with heat waves, pollution, dehydration and much more. Instead of opting for chiffon or polyester scarves, use muslin/cotton printed scarves for the summer season. These will help to prevent rashes and breakouts while giving a proper coverage to your skin.
2) Lightweight, Khaadi/Cotton Kurtis
Kolkata is a paradise for people who love shopping from organic brands. Textiles like Khaadi, Cotton, Muslin, and Taant are some popular options to look out for. These come in a variety of designs, prints, patterns and colour and are also super gentle on the skin. These range from Rs 500-1000 and are a life-saver during summers. These do not stick/cling to the skin, hence making it super breathable and light.
3) Choose the right colour
Summers does not necessarily mean, avoiding some particular colours. Instead, choose options like rust, mustard, beige, off whites, creams and light shades of blue. The menfolk can always experiment with Kurtas, and flared bottoms, commonly known as "pyjamas.” These are breezy and mostly made out of organic cottons and linens, which are a convenient switch from the heavy and bulky denims.
4) Saree lovers rejoice!
Kolkata is popular for its handloom and handicrafts sector. Sarees like Taant with Kantha Stitch, Cottons, and organic fabrics are worn by women all over the year. However, the millennial generation can opt for subtle and easy on the eye prints and designs to carry off in the heat. In case of an occasion or wedding, ditch those heavy silk and embroidered sarees, and opt for textiles like this. Style them with oxidised jewellery and a kohl rimmed eye. This staple piece can be worn to multiple occasions in the summer heat.
5) Opt for Fabric Jewellery
Accessories made out of fabrics, shells etc are an excellent way to jazz up your wardrobe in the summer heat. These will avoid reddening and blisters on the sensitive areas of the neck, ears and hands. They look quirky and add a personal touch of your style to the entire ensemble. Pair it with a white top or palazzos to finish the entire look.
